In a shocking incident on Monday morning, at least 30 readymade garment (RMG) workers were injured due to a boiler explosion at a factory in Sreepur upazila, Gazipur. The explosion occurred around 9 AM in a factory located near the HD Apparel garment factory in the Jhainabazar area.
According to Sohel Rana, the factory’s electric in-charge, the mini boiler in the sample room was activated by an operator around 8 AM. It is believed that the boiler overheated and subsequently exploded due to either a lack of water in the tank or a malfunctioning water pump.
The blast produced a loud bang, scattering parts of the boiler across the room and causing significant damage to the facility, including shattered glass windows, broken cabinets, and damaged tables and equipment. Several workers sustained injuries from flying glass and while attempting to evacuate the premises.
Witnesses Taiz Uddin and Kamal Hossain, who were present at the time, reported hearing a loud noise from the sample section before realizing there had been an explosion, which even punctured the factory’s tin roof.
Emergency services quickly arrived on the scene, and ten of the injured workers were transported to local hospitals for treatment, while the remaining workers received first aid at the site.
Authorities from the Fire Service and police conducted an inspection of the area following the incident.
