Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus declared that the interim administration would undertake important labour reforms, a major step to increase foreign investment in Bangladesh’s manufacturing sector. He said this when meeting with former British Prime Minister Theresa May in Baku, Azerbaijan, during the COP29 global climate summit.
May voiced her desire to discuss this issue and voiced her worries about migration and human trafficking. Prof. Yunus said that legal migration routes from Bangladesh to Europe could discourage human trafficking and lessen dangerous, irregular migration.
Prof. Yunus also met with President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan during his visit, and he conveyed a strong desire to improve bilateral relationships and expand economic prospects between the two countries. A high-level Azerbaijani delegation is scheduled to travel to Bangladesh early next year to discuss a full agreement, according to Aliyev.
The Chief Adviser promoted more bilateral trade, people-to-people contacts, and collaboration in international fora, underscoring the significance of closer ties. He emphasised the achievement of Bangladeshi workers in the nation’s shipbuilding industry and the possibility for employment possibilities for Bangladeshis in Azerbaijan.
Separately, Prof Yunus met with Lu Alckmin, the wife of Brazil’s Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, who presented him with her book about his work. They discussed enhancing trade and cooperation between Bangladesh and Brazil, South America’s largest economy.
