ITUC or the International Trade Union Confederation has alleged workers’ rights in readymade garment, shipbreaking and leather sectors in Bangladesh were deteriorating due to the Government inaction.
According to media reports, ITUC report ‘We Want Better Bangladesh: Violation of Workers’ Rights in Readymade Garment, Shipbreaking and Leather Sectors’, released recently, alleged this even as it, reportedly, added ‘sexual violence is rife, millions of workplaces are barely monitored by Government labour inspectors, and people are trapped in jobs with poverty wages.’
The ITUC allegations have, in the meanwhile, come under scrutiny, with the BGMEA President Faruque Hassan, reportedly, terming the report ‘unacceptable’ and, reportedly, underlined, “The ITUC should provide the names of factories in which they found violations. Without any specific name of the factory, it is not possible to check the issues.”
The President of the apex garment maker’s body in the country further, reportedly, stated it was internationally recognised that the working condition in Bangladesh’s RMG factories improved a lot in the last few years.
“…we are improving our practices daily and if any rights group finds any violation in the sector, they must have to mention the name of the factory to verify…,” reportedly, added the BGMEA President.
