
In a first, Dr. Rubana Huq, the incumbent President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and her son Navidul Huq have been elected as Directors in the recently held biennial election of the trade body, which makes them the first mother son duo to do so.
Media reports maintained this while underlining that Dr. Rubana and Navidul were elected on behalf of the Forum, one of the panels that contested the BGMEA election held on Sunday, which is led by ABM Shamsuddin.
It may be mentioned here that Dr. Rubana (Managing Director of Mohammadi Group and wife of late Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Annisul Huq), in 2019, became the first woman President of the apex garment makers’ body (BGMEA).
The Managing Director of Giant Group, Faruque Hasan —Faruque Hassan led Sammilito Parishad, on 4 April, won the trade body’s biennial election, securing 24 posts of Directors out of 35 — is all set to be elected the new President of BGMEA (as majority of his panel, Sammilito Parishad won in the election) even as the elected Directors of the traders’ body will, reportedly, meet on 16 April to elect the new President while the new committee will take charge on 20 April.
