
The apex garment makers’ body in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority or SREDA so as to ensure energy efficiency and increase the use of renewable energy in Bangladesh’s apparel industry.
According to media reports, the President of the garment makers’ body Dr. Rubana Huq presided over the signing ceremony (that took place in capital Dhaka on 1 April) even as Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury (Prime Minister’s Energy Adviser), GIZ Bangladesh Country Director Angelika Fleddermann, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid and Dr. Ahmad Kaikaus (Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister), reportedly, joined the signing ceremony virtually.
Under the MoU, SREDA and BGMEA will work jointly to enhance awareness on both the opportunities to use renewable energy and energy efficiency in all industries and contribute to the journey towards transformation of the energy sector to clean and green energy even as both the parties will also make coordinated efforts to mobilise investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency for reducing carbon emission, increasing competitiveness and scaling up interventions in the apparel sector.
