Even if garment makers in Bangladesh continue to battle the fallouts of the coronavirus pandemic, they are adopting a number of strategies to cope with its impacts.
This was maintained in media reports, according to which industry people are adopting an array of steps including reorganising capacity and utilisation plan, cost-cutting, efficiency enhancement, etc.
As per the industry people to deal with the crisis, diverse practices like taking orders below production costs were also noticed amongst some enterprises even as general cost-cutting measures included less investment in research and development, suspension of overtime, reduction in workforce, etc., while other approaches included opting for new products and markets such as online marketplace and upgrading technologies even as a recent study has maintained that about 10 per cent out of the 620 surveyed factories said they had taken 50-100 per cent of their orders which did not cover their production costs even as it found that
such tendency was rather high amongst the factories (mainly woven units) located in Dhaka and Gazipur.
