Dhaka and Thimpu have agreed to work together for taking quick advantages from the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) signed in December 2020.
According to media reports, a decision towards the same was revealed during a recent meeting between Bangladesh Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi — Tipu Munshi underlined that Bhutan is a friend of Bangladesh and that there is a huge opportunity to increase trade between the two countries — and Bhutanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Rinchen Kuentsyl, in Dhaka recently.
I would like to take advantage of the PTA by completing the formalities of both the countries as soon as possible, reportedly, stated the Bangladesh Commerce Minister even as Rinchen Kuentsyl on his part, reportedly, underlined that the Government of his country was working on a priority basis to take advantage of the PTA.
It may be mentioned here that discussing the issue of PTA with Bhutan, President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Dr. Rubana Huq, reportedly, told the media earlier, “We see opportunities everywhere, especially when it is within our South Asian region,” and went on to add that Bangladesh exported garment items more than US $ 300,000 to Bhutan at 30 per cent duty and that the two-way trade between Bangladesh and Bhutan was US $ 57.9 million in fiscal 2018-19.
