The Chittagong Port – Bangladesh’s principal sea port, which handles majority of the country’s exports and imports, has moved up six positions to emerge as the 58th busiest container port in Lloyd’s List (the world’s oldest journal on ports and shipping) of 100 top ports across the globe, recently.
The first position was bagged by the Chinese port of Shanghai with a throughput of 43,303,000 twenty equivalent units (TEUs), while a total of 24 Chinese ports are on Lloyd’s top 100 list this time.
As per the Lloyd’s List, Chittagong port’s flourishing export trade of RMG continues to drive throughput numbers with the port handling a total of 3,088,187 TEUs of containers in 2019, posting a 6.3 per cent annual growth in container handling up from that of 2,903,996 TEUs in 2018.
Meanwhile, India’s Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Mundra port have secured 33rd and 37th positions, respectively, while Sri Lanka’s Port of Colombo ranked 24th in the list.
