The garment workers’ protest that started on Sunday, continues unabated, with hundreds of apparel workers reportedly hitting the streets in and around capital Dhaka on Wednesday demanding disbursal of last month’s wages.
Areas like Bhashantek, Shah Ali, Badda, Bhatara, Mirpur, and many more witnessed workers coming out on the streets to show their dissent.
If workers from MEC Garments in Darus Salam assembled at Gabtoli on Wednesday morning to protest against delay in getting their salaries, those from Shamser Razia Garments and Shakib Garments, laid siege at Pragati Sarani and Mirpur-10 intersection, respectively, claimed media reports.
Meanwhile, as per Officer in Charge of Shah Ali Police Station, around 150 people working in small factories occupied an area near Muktijoddha Market for an hour.
It may be mentioned here that the workers’ agitation is going on despite instructions from the Government authorities to ensure that workers are paid by 16 April.
Earlier Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina rolled out a Coronavirus bailout package of Taka 50 billion to help the export-oriented sectors, to pay the workers’ wages.
