The Government of Cambodia has announced an 11 per cent hike in wages for the garment and footwear workers. The new minimum wage will be US $ 170 a month and will come into effect by early next year.
The employer will pay US $ 165 while rest US $ 5 will be paid by the Government, informed Ministry of Labour, Vocation and Training. Collective Union of Movement of Workers President Pav Sina has hailed the move but still feels it’s not enough.
“Government’s decision to give a wage hike and other benefits offered to workers which are paid by employers is a good start for this year, however, it is not enough for a decent living yet,” Pav Sina was quoted as saying by RFA’s Khmer Service.
The Government needs to work more to provide better working conditions to the garment workers, he adds.
The move to increase the wages will impact around 700,000 people who work in the more than 700 garment and shoe factories in Cambodia. The country has witnessed continuous protests over wages in the recent years.
