Taffere Tesfachew, a member of the United Nations Committee for Development Policy (CDP), met with Anwar Hossain, Administrator of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, Dhaka.
The meeting focused on Bangladesh’s impending graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status and the implications this transition may have for the country’s economy, particularly the ready-made garment (RMG) industry, which plays a vital role in Bangladesh’s economic landscape.
In the discussion, Anwar Hossain raised awareness of the potential challenges and opportunities that could arise from this significant change. He stressed the importance of strategic planning to navigate a seamless and sustainable transition for the RMG sector.
Both Tesfachew and Hossain underscored the need for a comprehensive and inclusive approach to mitigate any potential negative impacts while capitalising on emerging opportunities in the market.
The meeting also saw participation from key figures including A H M Jahangir, Wing Chief of the Economic Relations Division (ERD) and Project Director of the SSGP Project, along with Dr. Mostafa Abid Khan, Component Manager of the SSGP Project at ERD. Members of the Supporting Team, including Inamul Huq Bablu, Shams Mahmud, Asif Ashraf, and Miran Ali, were also actively engaged in the discussions.
