Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) has urged the Federal Government to prioritize the garment industry in energy supply on the pattern introduced by Bangladesh. Ejaz A Khokhar, Central Chairman, PRGMEA, stated that about 100 MMCFD gas was allocated to the entire export-oriented industry but currently only the spinners are availing the benefits. He urged the Ministry of Commerce to focus on the apparel industry, which can generate employment and foreign exchange worth up to US $ 500 million by enhancing its exports to the EU; and contribute to local taxes. He further added that the apparel industry in Punjab is becoming uncompetitive within Pakistan due to prolonged power load shedding and complete gas supply suspension, while there was smooth gas and power supply in the other provinces.
