Chittagong Port, which handles nearly 90 per cent of Bangladesh’s seaborne trade including the all-important apparel shipments, is going to utilise the experiences of the global epidemic, to face the challenges of 2021.
This was, reportedly, underlined by Rear Admiral SM Abul Kalam Azad, the Chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), speaking to the media, while underlining that Chittagong Port has to increase its capacity to not only handle Bangladesh’s growing import-export pressure but also transit goods to neighbouring countries like Bhutan, India and Nepal.
“We have already been able to land the first commercial ship at Matarbari and works on the Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) are going on in full swing,” said Rear Admiral SM Abul Kalam Azad adding, “Using those experiences (experiences of the global epidemic), we have been quickly implementing ongoing projects and formulating new plans and have also identified the challenges and priorities of the New Year.”
According to reports, port authorities are now focussing on new infrastructure, automation and digitisation in official and operational activities, collection of modern container and cargo handling equipment, construction of jetties, terminals, maintenance including dredging of channels for transportation of ships, etc.
