Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her meetings with newly appointed Swedish and Spanish Ambassadors on Thursday appreciated Sweden for not cancelling work orders relating to the apparel industry during the coronavirus pandemic while calling upon both Sweden and Spain to invest in special economic zones and hi-tech parks in the country, as per media reports.
The Prime Minister also reportedly thanked the Swedish retailer H&M for not cancelling any order at a time when garment production in the country (Bangladesh) came down owing to cancellation of orders by various nations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Underlining Sweden wanted to work more closely with Bangladesh on social and economic issues, the Swedish envoy, Alexandra Berg Von Linde, reportedly further added that Sweden has developed many green and environment-friendly technologies and requested Bangladesh to use those.
“We are setting up 100 SEZs (special economic zones) and creating conducive business environment and opportunities there, so, Sweden can invest here,” Hasina reportedly told Alexandra.
Meanwhile, in a separate meeting with Spanish Ambassador Francisco de Asis Benitez Salas, the Bangladesh Prime Minister reportedly called upon the Spanish investors to invest in high-tech parks along with the SEZs while requesting investors from both the countries (Sweden and Spain) to invest in Bangladesh’s promising leather, jute and pharmaceutical sectors apart from the RMG sector.
