In a move that may feel will increase the lead time and cost of production for those importing cotton from the US, Bangladesh Government has recently re-imposed the provision of fumigation of US cotton at the ports.
Reports maintained this while adding previously cotton imported from the US would have to be locally fumigated even if the raw material underwent such treatment before being shipped, which created barriers to export as the extra time and costs involved led to delays in completing work orders, which continued for a period of almost five decades before the Government decided to ease the rule of double fumigation even as it and issued a circular in this regard on 19th February this year.
However, as per a gazette notification issued on 25th April, the Government has reportedly decided to impose again a similar fumigation provision.
