Bangladesh Government recently allowed two more hours of overtime for the workers of the export-oriented garment factories for the next six months in view of increased work orders from global buyers.
However, workers’ earning from overtime has taken a hit in view of reduction in the basic wage rate, which is further aggravated by rising commodity prices, adding burden on them.
Media reports maintained this citing the workers and union leaders, who, reportedly, underlined the same in response to the recent decision of the Ministry of Labour regarding overtime.
Labour leaders further, reportedly, underlined earlier, the basic wage of the apparel workers was 65 per cent of the total wage allowance and at that time the workers used to work overtime for two hours.
However, they now don’t make the same earning even after working for four hours.
Meanwhile, as per the circular issued by the Government, any apparel factory can ask its workers to do overtime for a total of four hours a day, which has, reportedly, been made effective from 17 April for next six months.
