A view-exchange meeting focused on the current labour situation in Bangladesh’s garment industry took place at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara. The gathering brought together representatives from the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), the Bangladesh Army, Industrial Police, the Department of Factory Inspection, and district DCs from Dhaka, Gazipur, and Narayanganj, alongside various security agencies and garment factory representatives.
Chaired by BGMEA Administrator Md. Anwar Hossain, the meeting featured Major General Md. Moin Khan, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 9th Infantry Division, leading the joint forces. Additional IGP of the Industrial Police, Md. Sibgat Ullah, and members of the BGMEA Support Committee were also in attendance.
During the meeting, Md. Anwar Hossain sought ongoing cooperation from the Bangladesh Army and law enforcement to ensure stability across all industries, particularly in the garment sector. The discussions centered around the various law and order challenges that the industrial sector faces.
Factory representatives voiced their security concerns, and the importance of resolving disputes between factory owners and workers through dialogue was highlighted. Participants stressed the need for vigilance in preventing any potential labour dissatisfaction.
The Bangladesh Army reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a secure environment in industrial areas and encouraged factories to pursue legal action against criminals identified through CCTV footage.
Major General Md. Moin Khan assured garment entrepreneurs of the army’s steadfast support, noting that 99 per cent of factories in key regions such as Gazipur, Savar-Ashulia, Dhamrai, and Narayanganj are operating smoothly, thanks to their direct cooperation.
He further emphasised the Army’s continued support for the garment industry as a vital contributor to the country’s economy.
The Industrial Police reiterated that no one is above the law and vowed to prevent disruptions to industry operations, ensuring accountability for those responsible.
All parties present at the meeting committed to collaborating toward a harmonious and productive atmosphere within the garment sector, aiming to further strengthen the industry’s resilience and growth.
