Workers of a garment factory in Dhaka’s Tejgaon Industrial Area blocked a major road on Sunday, demanding payment of their dues before the factory’s sudden closure.
The protest began around 10 am after employees of Posh Garments arrived at work and found the factory shut without prior notice. They soon occupied the Tibet intersection, halting traffic between Mohakhali and Saat Rasta, according to police.
“As the workers were firm in their demand for unpaid wages, they could not be removed from the road,” said Aslam Hossain, officer-in-charge of Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station. He added that the protesters insisted on clearing all outstanding salaries before the shutdown.
Following discussions with the factory management and local authorities, the workers were assured of a meeting later in the day to address the issue. Around 1:45pm, the blockade was lifted and traffic movement resumed.
The demonstration caused heavy congestion in Tejgaon and surrounding areas. Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Gulshan Traffic Division posted updates on Facebook during the blockade, urging commuters to use alternate routes.
