Even as various reports are doing rounds as to the actual percentage of garment manufacturing units that have already paid workers’ salaries and festival bonus, the President of the apex garment makers’ body, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Faruque Hassan has expressed hope all units (100 per cent) associated with the BGMEA will pay workers’ salaries and bonuses before the day of the Eid-ul-Fitr.
Amidst reports that the holy festival of Eid-ul-Fitr is likely to be celebrated in Bangladesh on Friday, addressing a press conference on 12 May (Wednesday), the BGMEA President called upon the apparel workers to not create any indiscipline and went on to, reportedly, claim that more than 97 per cent factory owners have paid workers’ salaries already.
We hope 100 per cent workers’ salaries and festival bonus will be paid before the day of the Eid-ul-Fitr, further underlined the BGMEA President, who, reportedly, maintained that 1,913 factories under BGMEA are operating in the country.
Further, out of the 1,913 units, the owners of 1,866 units (97.54 per cent) have, reportedly, already paid salary for the month of April up to 11 May while bonus was also, reportedly, being paid in 1,882 factories (99 per cent) till Tuesday.
