In a bid to maintain stability, discipline, and law and order in the country’s largest export-earning sector, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has held a series of dialogues with representatives from various non-industrial labour organisations and worker petition groups.
The discussions, held on 5th and 7th July at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, aimed to address concerns around peaceful labour activism and to prevent unlawful activities such as road blockades and vandalism that disrupt public life and the industry’s operations.
At the 7th July coordination meeting, BGMEA Vice President Shahidullah Azim and Directors including Fazlul Hoque, Kamrul Hasan, and Asif Ashraf were present. The meetings were also joined by Dr. Anisuzzaman Chowdhury, Special Assistant to the Principal Advisor to the Government, underscoring the importance of the engagement.
During the dialogue, BGMEA urged all labour organisations to pursue any wage or benefit-related disputes through legal and peaceful means. The association reiterated its commitment to resolving such issues fairly and promptly, emphasising the need to maintain a healthy industrial environment.
Leaders from a wide range of labour platforms expressed support for BGMEA’s approach and pledged to work collaboratively to protect worker rights through lawful and constructive dialogue.
To further strengthen awareness, BGMEA announced that it will soon initiate a public campaign through posters and announcements to inform workers of their rights and legal options.
Both sides acknowledged that regional labour issues should be resolved locally through the BGMEA’s Labor Welfare Centers, with swift action to address concerns and prevent escalation.
This move comes as part of BGMEA’s broader effort to ensure a sustainable and compliant labour ecosystem, especially at a time when the global spotlight remains focused on Bangladesh’s garment industry.
