The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Asia Foundation have agreed to join forces to improve the skills and working conditions of female workers in the country’s readymade garment (RMG) sector. The partnership aims to foster a more sustainable and inclusive industry.
A delegation from the Asia Foundation, led by Country Representative Kazi Faisal Bin Seraj, Program Director Aini Islam, and Communications & Outreach Lead Kashfia Kais, met with BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan at his office in Uttara to discuss potential areas of collaboration. The discussion centered on initiatives to support skill enhancement, leadership development, and overall well-being of women employed in apparel factories.
In his remarks, Mahmud Hasan Khan acknowledged the vital role of the garment industry in Bangladesh’s economy and expressed his commitment to prioritizing the safety and welfare of female workers. He highlighted the importance of partnerships with international organizations like the Asia Foundation in achieving these objectives.
The Asia Foundation conveyed its interest in working with BGMEA on various projects, including vocational training programs, health and safety measures, management development for mid-level supervisors, and establishing community-based daycare centers. The foundation also proposed introducing circularity practices within the industry to promote sustainability.
Both parties expressed optimism that this collaboration will strengthen their relationship and lead to new initiatives that will make Bangladesh’s garment sector more humane, equitable, and environmentally sustainable.
