As per the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), all of Bangladesh’s operational ready-made garment (RMG) companies have successfully paid salaries for April, with 99.67 percent of them having done so for May.The announcement comes just before Eid-ul-Adha, ensuring that workers can celebrate the festival with peace of mind alongside their families.
In a press release issued on Thursday, BGMEA revealed that out of the 2,092 operational factories, 1,750 in Dhaka and 342 in Chittagong, only seven in Dhaka are still in the process of completing May’s wage payments. Additionally, nearly all factories have paid their Eid bonuses, with only two factories yet to do so, one currently under layoff and the owner of the other reportedly abroad.
Md. Anwar Hossain, BGMEA Administrator, thanked factory owners for their dedication to making on-time payments in spite of a number of obstacles. He also thanked the Bangladesh Army, law enforcement, intelligence services, the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE), worker leaders, the media, and government advisers from the finance, labour, commerce, and home affairs sectors for their combined efforts in ensuring a seamless wage disbursement process.
The BGMEA has directed factories to implement staggered Eid holidays in order to manage holiday traffic congestion. Many employees left Dhaka by 4th June, after the staggered leave started on 3rd June.
