
Around 43 per cent of women workers in Bangladesh’s readymade garment (RMG) sector are victims of malnutrition.
This was underlined by the speakers, who, attending the sensitisation meeting titled ‘Strengthening Workers’ Access to Pertinent Nutrition Opportunities (SWAPNO)’ organised by the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishment (DIFE) and Department of Labour in association with Switzerland-based Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) recently, said that a large number of workers at different industries are suffering from malnutrition.
The speakers further highlighting the importance of ensuring nutritious foods for the workers so as to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reportedly, maintained that malnutrition can reduce the working capacity and productivity by 20 per cent.
The event was attended amongst others by the State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian (as chief guest), Labour Department Director General AKM Mizanur Rahman, Khulna City Corporation Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque (as the special guest), GAIN Country Director Rudaba Khondker, Khulna Divisional Commissioner Ismiel Hossain, DIFE Joint Inspector General (Health) Md. Mustafizur Rahman.
