Bangladesh is taking an approach towards modernising its apparel manufacturing industry with a view to comply with the international standard of production quality.
Manufacturers are bringing in more advanced machinery to not only follow the globally established standards of production but also to reduce the physical labour. The current workforce in the Bangladesh garment industry stands at 4 million.
“It is part of the industry’s efforts to become globally standardised,” Faruque Hassan, Senior Vice President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) informed Apparel Resources.
“Big investments are being made to develop the machinery,” he added.
According to Hassan, the decision of standardisation came to utmost importance post some major industrial disasters like the Tazreen fire and Rana Plaza collapse in the past.
“The move is aimed to transform our garment industry into a standardised and globally acknowledged source of quality apparel manufacturing,” he underlined.
Currently, Bangladesh’s garment manufacturing industry consists of nearly 4,500 registered companies with a net value of over US $ 28 billion.
The country aims to touch US $ 50 billion-mark in garment exports by the year 2021. The move to adopt latest production technology will further aid the sector to achieve the target.
