On Friday, leaders from the Garment Workers’ Trade Union Centre (GWTUC) rallied in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka, urging the immediate implementation of a tripartite agreement in the garment sector, alongside a call for a 15 per cent wage increase for workers to alleviate ongoing sector crises.
The protest, led by GWTUC President Mantu Ghosh, emphasised the urgent need for the interim Government to act on the signed tripartite agreement aimed at addressing the numerous challenges faced by garment workers.
Adviser to the organisation, Abdullah Kafee Ratan, highlighted the historical sacrifices made by workers during past movements and insisted that the interim Government must honour the workers’ demands.
Additional calls for action included a demand from worker leader Sadequr Rahman Shamim for the distribution of Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) goods among garment workers to help them access essential items at more affordable prices.
The rally featured speeches from various central leaders, including Vice-President Joly Talukder and other activists like Ziaul Kabir Khokan, Monzur Moin, and Dulal Saha, who all echoed the urgent need for Government intervention.
The rally culminated in a protest procession that took to the streets, demonstrating the collective voice of garment workers fighting for better conditions and recognition of their contributions to the economy.
