About 100 factories in the Ashulia industrial district reopened on Wednesday after a concerted effort by the army and police that provided security assurances to the garment industry.
The operation was started in reaction to the recent unrest that resulted in the closure of more than a hundred factories.
Superintendent of Industrial Police-1 Md Sarwar Alam said that some Ashulia garment factories remained closed on Wednesday because of continued worker demonstrations, despite the heightened security presence.
To provide journalists with an update on the most recent state of affairs in the industry, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has scheduled an emergency press conference.
On Monday, workers from various factories in Ashulia’s Baipail-Abdullahpur area gathered outside their workplaces and staged protests instead of reporting for duty. Workers started protesting with various demands, an official from the Industrial Police said.
About two dozen businesses in Ashulia are still closed, despite the joint army and police operation that started on Monday night to restore order throughout the industrial zones of Savar, Ashulia, and Gazipur. Workers were demonstrating with a variety of demands as outsiders assaulted certain factories.
Workers in Ashulia have blocked roadways in recent rallies, calling for equal pay for men and women working in ready-to-wear (RMG) companies, among other demands.
