Workers at several garment factories in the Bhogra area of Gazipur city staged a protest on Monday morning, demanding overdue salaries. The unrest led authorities to declare a holiday for 10 to 12 factories in the region.
The demonstration began around 9:45 am when employees of Mim Garments took to the streets, blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for approximately 20 minutes. Frustrated by unpaid wages, the workers escalated their protest by throwing bricks and attempting to vandalise nearby factories, calling on fellow workers to join their cause.
Law enforcement officials arrived at the scene to restore order and successfully dispersed the protesting workers. Assistant Police Superintendent Wahiduzzaman Raju of Gazipur Industrial Police-2 confirmed that the protest was centered around wage issues, and the situation was eventually brought under control.
In the aftermath of the unrest, factory authorities opted to suspend operations in several facilities to prevent further escalation. The protests highlight ongoing concerns regarding timely salary payments in the garment industry, which employs a significant portion of the local workforce.
