The Bangladesh Government has given the green light for a new water treatment plant in the National Special Economic Zone (NSEZ) located in Mirsharai, Chittagong. This state-of-the-art facility is set to treat 50 million litres of water per day, with the capability to expand its supply to 100 million litres if necessary, providing a stable and reliable water source for industries in the zone.
The Taka 518.61 crore project has been awarded to a joint venture comprising ZHEC-BOW-SMEDRIC, a Chinese joint venture, with completion anticipated by June 2026. Project director Md Helal Ahmed highlighted the significance of this plant, particularly for the textile sector, which is a major driver of the Bangladeshi economy. The availability of uninterrupted water supply will directly benefit numerous textile factories operating within NSEZ, including prominent names such as the Ha-Meem Group, Epyllion Group, and the Ananta Group. These facilities will now be able to enhance their production efficiency and minimise delays caused by water shortages.
The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase reviewed and approved the project proposal from the Office of the Chief Adviser, marking a significant step towards bolstering the infrastructure of NSEZ. This development is expected to attract both local and foreign investments, further solidifying the region’s appeal as a hub for industries such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and agro-processing.
In addition to improving industrial operations, the project is anticipated to create thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities, contributing to the local economy. With this initiative, the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (Beza) is taking crucial steps towards ensuring a reliable water supply for NSEZ, reinforcing the Government’s vision of industrial growth and economic progress in the region.
