A garment worker, Jalal Uddin, aged 40, who sustained birdshot injuries during a clash between fellow workers and the police in the Jarun area of Konabari, Gazipur, on 8th November, passed away early Sunday (12th November) at Dhaka Medical College Hospital while receiving treatment.
Reports claimed this adding this brings the recent death toll in the readymade garment (RMG) unrest to four.
Jalal, a sewing operator at an Islam Group garment factory in Jarun, hailed from Bamhati, Kendua, Netrakona.
According to Inspector Bachchu Mia, in charge of the DMCH police outpost, Jalal succumbed to his injuries in the hospital’s intensive care unit around 12:30 am on Sunday.
The incident occurred during a demonstration for a wage hike in Gazipur, with Jalal being one of the workers injured by birdshot.
The unrest began on November 8 when employees from three Islam Group factories in the Jarun area protested for higher wages.
A clash ensued as police attempted to disperse the demonstrators, deploying tear gas and rubber bullets, resulting in injuries to at least a dozen workers.
Jalal Uddin and another injured worker, Anjuara Khatun, 24, were rushed to DMCH in critical condition. Anjuara was declared dead later that day, while Jalal fought for his life in the hospital’s ICU until succumbing to his injuries.
