The delay in regulating the e-commerce business in Bangladesh, which has a market size of around US $ 1.6 billion, has resulted in growing indiscipline and consequently resulted in suffering of a large segment of consumers.
Media reports maintained this adding the Government had enacted guidelines for the e-commerce business on 4 July 2021 even if the e-commerce sector in Bangladesh has been there for more than a decade while also gaining popularity of late with the surge of internet users.
The reports further added that after the formulation of the National Digital Commerce Policy-2018, the Commerce Ministry took around three years to come up with the guidelines, even as it maintained that the Commerce Ministry was yet to form the commerce cell and there is no list of eligible e-commerce businesses before it recently decided that it would make mandatory registration of all existing and upcoming online marketplaces.
