Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday called upon the textile and garment sector of the country to go for product diversification and market expansion to give a fillip to the export earnings.
This she did while inaugurating the National Textile Day 2019 and the Multipurpose Textile Fair at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in capital Dhaka.
“I think it’s very necessary to diversify textile products in keeping with the demand in the world market,” said Hasina while adding that Bangladesh should undertake initiatives on its own to find new markets and assess the demand for fashion and designs of apparel items in the markets.
She also called upon the entrepreneurs to add value to their existing products and ‘explore new markets to raise the country’s export income’ while underlining that fashions, designs and colours of apparel items in the global market were constantly changing, requiring diversification of the products in line with buyers’ demands.
“The garment manufacturers and others concerned will have to work hard to increase the demand for our products in the world market … They’ve to formulate short-, medium- and long-term plans for achieving this,” stated Hasina.
She added, “As competition prevails among the apparel manufacturers in the world market, I cannot say whether our exporters bargain with buyers or not. But I think they should do it and tell the buyers and concerned countries.”
The Prime Minister also assured to extend all possible support in this direction.
