
Even as days of Bangladesh’s LDC graduation are coming closer, business leaders and experts have called upon the Government to start extensive preparation immediately to secure GSP Plus scheme in the European market.
Media reports maintained this while adding experts have made this call so as to keep Bangladesh’s exports unhurt even as they apprehend post the LDC graduation, around 61 per cent of apparel exports to EU may come under new tariff regime.
Participating in a webinar on LDC graduation and GSP+ in EU organised by the Bangladesh German Chamber of Commerce and Industry on 7 April (Wednesday), the experts harped on formulation of a comprehensive transition strategy and starting negotiations for extension of existing trade benefits, availing special trade benefits in other markets, including India, China, Canada, Japan while underlining the significance of signing free trade agreements (FTAs) with major bilateral and multilateral trading partners to keep exports unharmed.
It’s time for Bangladesh to have a cohesive, dynamic and inclusive transition strategy for the GSP Plus scheme as well as link it up with other global initiatives…., reportedly, maintained Distinguished Fellow of Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Debapriya Bhattacharya even as he went on to underline that it was high time for Bangladesh to prepare itself for securing the GSP Plus scheme in EU market as the European Commission was now working on the issue while adding that by June, the European Commission will send the proposal related to GSP Plus to the European parliament, after which it will be a challenging task for Bangladesh to convince the parliament he felt as the parliament does not, reportedly, discuss technical issues, rather concentrate on governance, social, labour and issues.
