
Close on heels of garment makers seeking further financial support from the Government to help them pay the workers’ wages of August, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has underlined that his Government may consider another stimulus package for the readymade garment sector.
According to media reports, AHM Mustafa Kamal, during a meeting, said that he had received a letter in this direction from the garment makers which sought financial assistance to pay wages to the workers in August, while adding that a decision to this end would depend on the consent of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
It may be mentioned here that hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, garment manufacturers had sought financial assistance from the Government to pay the wage of the garment workers for the month of August, recently.

The apex garment makers’ body, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), had reportedly written a letter in this direction on 20 August to Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal underlining it would help the industry sustain competitiveness in face of the COVID-19 outbreak.
The BGMEA President, Dr. Rubana Huq, reportedly called upon the Government to make available easy-term loan with low interest rate for the garment makers, akin to what was done for the month of July, to help the industry pay wages to the workers in August.
