Hard-hit by the coronavirus pandemic, Bangladesh garment makers have sought financial assistance from the Government to pay the wage of the garment workers for the month of August, claimed media reports.
The apex garment makers’ body, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), reportedly wrote a letter in this direction on 20 August to Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal underlining it would help the industry sustain competitiveness in face of the COVID-19 outbreak.
The BGMEA President, Dr. Rubana Huq, reportedly, called upon the Government to make available easy-term loan with low interest rate for the garment makers, akin to what was done for the month of July, to help the industry pay wages to the workers in August.
It may be mentioned here that the Government had earlier rolled out Taka 50 billion for export-oriented sectors to help them pay the workers’ wage for a period of 3 months, starting from March.
