The latest hike of gas prices in Bangladesh have put the industries in a tight situation even if for large industries, the price of gas per unit has increased nearly threefold from Taka 11.98 to Taka 30, as per a notification issued by the Energy and Mineral Resources Division recently.
Media reports maintained this while adding the Government had not increased the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) used in the transport sector alongside gas used in homes so far.
The hike coming into effect from February, businesses have expressed their concern.
Speaking to the media, President of the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries Anwar-ul Alam Chowdhury Parvez reportedly said it will be tough for industries to sustain as the price hike of gas would impact cost of production and reduce competitiveness in global markets while the President of Bangladesh Textile Mills Association Mohammad Ali Khokon on his part reportedly stated such an increase will only double their production cost.
