Underlining that industrial energy fuel such as gas is vital for almost all industries especially for the apparel sector and its backward linkage industries, the President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Faruque Hassan maintained the readymade garment sector’s value addition through use of gas is Taka 53.6 crore in turnover, enabling around 3,700 jobs for every 10,000 cubic feet of gas used.
According to media reports, the BGMEA chair came up with this observation participating in a recent webinar titled ‘Future of Industrial Fuel Source in Bangladesh: LPG and LNG,’ organised by the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), participating in which experts called for diversification of energy mix so as to effectively meet industrial needs even as they stated that to speed-up industrial growth in a more environment-friendly and planned manner, Bangladesh needs to focus on the production of alternative, cleaner hydrocarbon fuels while also diversify its energy mix.
The BGMEA President further, reportedly, maintained that the apparel industry uses around 7-8 per cent of the country’s total gas supply, which is insignificant in terms of its contribution to the economy even as he stated that gas approximately contributes 30-35 per cent of the power for the industry.
Meanwhile, speaking at the event, Md. Maqbul-E-Elahi Chowdhury, a member of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), reportedly, maintained that depletion of gas reserves has been an issue and Bangladesh needs to increase its onshore and offshore fuel source exploration to diversify energy mix for industrial energy needs.
