Even as the 14-day countrywide lockdown imposed by the Bangladesh Government from 23 July on account of the rapid rise in COVID-19 cases continue, without any exception for the readymade garment industry and other export-oriented industries this time around, the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) has requested that some members of the staff be allowed at the knit factories for the sake of maintenance work, ensuring safety of the manufacturing units.
According to reports, the BKMEA has written a letter in this direction to the Deputy Commissioner of Narayanganj, seeking permission.
The BKMEA letter while maintaining that the maintenance work is not related to any kind of production, underlined further that it was mandatory to keep some staff inside the factories to ensure safety and maintenance works, failing which the machines could go out of order.
The garment makers’ body also, reportedly, requested the Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner to ensure that the entrepreneurs and staff members do not face any kind of harassment during their journey to the concerned factories for maintenance work.
