
Even as the new variant of Coronavirus, Omicron, continues to spread across the globe including in Germany, with experts and economists speculating over its impacts, policy-makers, business leaders and diplomats have cautioned if the pandemic continues in the next two to three months, Bangladesh’s exports to Germany might suffer a setback.
Md. Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, the Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Germany and ex Chairman of Bangladesh’s National Board of Revenue (NBR), reportedly, expressed the apprehensions while voicing his concerns over the existing pandemic situation in Germany.
It may be mentioned here Germany is the second-largest export destination for ‘Made in Bangladesh’ products even if in the last fiscal year, Bangladesh, reportedly, shipped over US $ 5.6 billion worth of goods to Germany, of which, more than 95 per cent were apparel items.
Meanwhile, Germany reported the highest single-day death toll on 18 December due to COVID-19 even as the Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Germany, reportedly, underlined, if the present pandemic continues, German economy will be hit hard, which might result in less procuring of consumer goods like apparel items, leather goods, etc.
