Bangladesh’s Chittagong Port, which is responsible for handling bulk of the imports and exports, is now all set to get additional cargo space that would enable it to handle at least 1 lakh twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers more annually after the customs authorities decided to remove an old auction shed from the port.
Secretary to the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), Omar Farooq, reportedly maintained this, speaking to the media while adding that the port authorities can earn around Taka 15-20 crore more every year even as the Chittagong Customs House, reportedly, expects to hand over the space to the CPA after removing all the goods by December this year.
According to reports, around 30 lakh TEU containers are handled annually in the port yard even as the capacity of the port yard is 49,018 TEU containers, while the CPA has already constructed a new auction shed costing Taka 22 crore for the Chittagong Customs House opposite the Port Stadium, which even though was inaugurated in September 2015, the removal process of the old shed was, reportedly, stuck in various complications for six years.
