Bangladesh’s apex garment makers’ body, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association or BGMEA, has sought support from Denmark for the continuation of the duty benefits in the European Union (EU) market.
According to media reports, Faruque Hassan, who is the President of the garment makers’ body, recently sought Danish support — Denmark is a member country of the EU which provides duty-free market access to Bangladesh as an LDC under its EBA programme — towards continuation of duty benefits (in the EU) for 12 years, which he, reportedly, said was needed to ensure Bangladesh’s smooth transition after graduation from LDC in 2026.
The BGMEA chair, reportedly, made this appeal during his recent meeting with Danish Ambassador to Bangladesh Winnie Estrup Petersen in Dhaka, in which was, reportedly, also present Soren Asbjorn Albertsen (Sector Counsellor), Ali Mushtaq Butt (Commercial Counsellor at the Danish Embassy), BGMEA Vice-President Miran Ali and Vice-President Shahidullah Azim, amongst others.
