The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association or BGMEA, which is the apex garment makers’ body in Bangladesh, urged the authorities concerned to continue efforts to enhance capacity and efficiency of the Chittagong Port — Chittagong Port is Bangladesh’s principal sea port and is responsible for lion’s share of imports and exports including apparel shipments — so as to meet the increased demand for exports and imports.
According to reports, a delegation of the garment makers’ body led by BGMEA President Faruque Hassan recently called upon State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury to put forth the request in this regard even as the BGMEA delegation urged the Government to expedite implementation of the development projects taken to further enhance capacity and improve the port facilities.
Underlining that the country’s economy was expanding, which resulted in growth in imports-exports, the BGMEA President further called for improved services and facilities at the land ports as well so as to accelerate export-import activities.
The BGMEA delegation led by Faruque Hassan comprised BGMEA First Vice-President Syed Nazrul Islam, Senior Vice-President SM Mannan (Kochi), former BGMEA President Md. Siddiqur Rahman, amongst others.
