Following the recent spate of order cancellations by global buyers that have posed serious challenges for the garment manufacturing sector, Bangladesh has urged the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to put pressure on the buyers so as to make sure they do not cancel orders.
The State Minister for Labour and Employment, Begum Monnujan Sufian, underlined this participating at a virtual summit on Thursday, adding ILO needs to ask buyers to fulfil their contractual obligations and refrain from order cancellations.
The State Minister for Labour and Employment further added that Bangladesh’s exports, especially readymade garments, fell drastically on account of order cancellations by the global buyers and manufacturers have had to call off production in the absence of adequate fresh work orders.
The Minister made these observations participating at the ‘ILO Global Summit on COVID-19 and World of Work—Building a Better Future of Work’.
