Following an application for injunction filed on 19 May 2022, a court in Dhaka has recently issued an injunction on the business between UK-based EWM Group and RMG companies of Bangladesh even if in its order, the court has, reportedly, directed the parties concerned to abstain from doing any business with any apparel manufacturing unit in Bangladesh using the brand name “Peacocks,” placing any order in the name of “Peacocks” by any foreign buyer or their agents and buying houses.
It may be mentioned here four Bangladeshi apparel manufacturers — the companies are Designtex Knitwear Limited, Designtex Fashions Limited, Knit Bazaar (Pvt) Limited and Bottoms Gallery (Pvt) Limited — have sued the UK-based apparel retailer (Edinburgh Woollen Mill or EWM) for not paying Taka 59.8 million in dues for exported items even as the Managing Directors of the four companies jointly filed a case with Joint District Judge’s Court in Dhaka on 14 March alleging EWM was trying to evade due payment on the pretext that its subsidiary Peacock, which imported the products, is bankrupt.
