A study conducted by ETI-GIZ-Brac University has brought to light a decline in the presence of female workers within the readymade garment (RMG) industry.
According to the study, the percentage of women workers decreased from 60.5 per cent in 2018 to 53.65 per cent in 2021, as revealed in a concept paper presented during an online discussion organised by Gender Platform Bangladesh.
The event, themed ‘Prevention of Violence against Women and Girls and Need for Appropriate Laws,’ featured discussions by lawmakers Shireen Akhtar, Shamsunnahar Bhuiyan, Tania Tak, Professor at the University of Dhaka, Shammin Sangsad, Hazera Khatun, Ayesha Siddiqui, and Rosanna Chaidhuri.
The concept paper, presented by AKM Ashraf Uddin, the executive director of Bangladesh Labour Foundation, noted a continuous decline in the trend, citing statistics from the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
In 1980, women comprised 80 per cent of the total employed workers, decreasing to 70 per cent in 2005.
