Eid-ul-Azha is on 1 August but as per media reports that cited data collected by the Industrial Police, a large number of workers employed in different industrial units including those that are into manufacturing of garments and textiles, spread across six industrial zones, were yet to get the festival allowance as of 27 July (Monday).
6,014 industrial units – in six zones of Khulna, Ahsulia, Chittagong, Gazipur, Mymensingh and Narayanganj – out of 7,602 factories that are under the Industrial Police’s jurisdiction, except Dhaka metropolitan area, were allegedly yet to pay workers the Eid bonus.
Further, of these 6,014 units, 2,878 are said to be into garments and textiles, of which 305 are associated with the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) and 165 units are under the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA).
Of the remaining, 967 are said to be members of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) and 1,439 associated with the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
Also, to be noted that as per the data collated by the Industrial Police, 291 textile and apparel units were yet to pay June’s wages to workers, as of Monday, 27 July.
However, as per reports, BGMEA has reportedly claimed that 1,378 out of its listed 1,874 factories have paid festival allowance until Monday, while festival allowance in 496 factories is under process.
