By signing the ‘American Business Act on Climate Pledge’, Walmart has joined the elite group of corporate titans in taking a pledge to fight climate change. As part of the new White House initiative, Walmart will focus to drive the production or procurement of 7 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of renewable energy globally by December 31, 2020 – an increase of more than 600 per cent versus our 2010 baseline; it will double the number of on-site solar energy projects at its US stores, Sam’s Clubs and distribution centres by 2020, compared to 2013 baseline. The company will also aim to reduce the total kWh-per-square-foot energy intensity required to power our buildings around the world by 20 per cent by 2020 against its 2010 baseline.
The retailer stated, “At Walmart, we believe climate change is an urgent and pressing challenge, and we must all do our part to reduce, avoid and mitigate the impact of rising greenhouse gas (GHG) levels.”
