At the recently held Retail’s Big Show in New York, Dutch RFID manufacturer Smartrac presented its latest development, Web DF, which is the first single chip High Frequency (HF) and Ultra High Frequency (UHF) inlay.
The Web DF is capable of handling product authenticity verification, inventory management, consumer loyalty tasks, and is compliant with NFC and RAIN RFID technology standards, which makes it suitable for retail-specific requirements. It collaborates the features and performance standards of the company’s highly successful Web UHF and Midas NFC inlays while retaining Web inlay’s retail-optimized dimensions (antenna size 30 x 50 mm/1.18 x 1.97 in, die-cut size 34 x 54 mm/1.34 x 2.13 in).

The two functionalities combined on Web DF enables it to be used for long-range application purposes (using RAIN RFID technology), and to exchange data in close proximity (using NFC technology). Both protocols may share a common, unique ID. The same tag also enables new marketing services such as product information or loyalty programs in conjunction with NFC-enabled smartphones. RAIN RFID is a wireless technology based on the UHF RFID protocol standard developed by GS1 and ISO, which provides superior read range and fast data transfer.
Web DF will be available in huge quantities by the second quarter of this year.
