Trouser has once again emerged as the most imported product by the European Union (EU) during the January to May 2017 period.
However, the EU continued its sluggish performance in overall apparel import during the said period and the trouser category was no exception.
The EU imported 469.08 million kg of trousers with a drop of 0.98 per cent on the Y-o-Y basis. Value-wise, the region was up 0.41 per cent and spent € 7,896.36 million to import trousers, whereas it spent € 7,863.74 million in the same period last year. These figures indicate the rise in unit prices which have hurt the EU’s financial spending.
Despite the slow market conditions in the EU, Bangladesh stayed ahead in the race as it continued to surpass the world’s largest apparel exporter China in trouser export to the EU.
Bangladesh recorded a rise of 0.69 per cent in volumes of trouser exports to the EU. The export value too indicated the country’s consolidation as it was up by 3.24 per cent on the yearly note.
Out of the total trouser import by the EU, 55.78 per cent came from Bangladesh (153.39 million kg) and China (109 million kg) combined.
China, however, reported a significant drop of 5.08 per cent in volume terms and 5.66 per cent in value terms on a Y-o-Y basis.
Although India is not a big exporter to the EU as far as trousers are concerned, the country noted a surge of 2.25 per cent to export 19.32 million kg of trousers during the period. However, India’s value-wise trouser export to the EU tumbled 2.31 per cent.
