The Chief Advisor was given an overview of the current state of the garment sector by Khandaker Rafiqul Islam, the Acting President of the BGMEA.
The Chief Adviser commended the garment industry’s economic contribution to the country as well as the BGMEA’s outstanding role in its development. He congratulated BGMEA for its bravery and voiced hope that the apparel sector will achieve its goal of exporting US $ 100 billion by 2030.
Meanwhile, he called on the country’s garment manufacturers to support the rebuilding of Bangladesh after 15 years of economic plunder under the dictatorship of Sheikh Hasina.
Speaking to the leaders of BGMEA, Prof Yunus emphasised the challenges inherited by the interim government. He said, “All the institutions were broken. We were in a mess. They left us in an economic crisis. But with the cooperation of everyone we can rebuild the nation.”
The Chief Adviser was informed by the BGMEA delegation during the meeting that his efforts to raise the standard of living for people worldwide are much valued.
Since he assumed the role of Chief Advisor to the Interim Government, a favourable atmosphere has been established throughout the apparel business. Bangladesh has gained great attitude and confidence, particularly from overseas purchasers.
To make up for the harm done to the garment industry’s reputation under the current conditions, the delegation asked the advisor to advocate for increased apparel purchases from Bangladesh, particularly from customers in the US and Canada.
The delegation proposed the formation of a task force that would include the Ministry of Finance, Bangladesh Bank, and the National Board of Revenue to address the current problems facing the apparel industry. The task force would focus on streamlining business procedures and removing obstacles to commerce.
Dr. Yunus had a favourable sentiment regarding the BGMEA delegation’s suggestion to establish the task force. and declared, “We’ll guarantee openness at every turn. Bangladeshis are incredibly talented individuals. Bangladesh is the second-biggest exporter of clothing worldwide. We want it to continue growing.”
