A value-chain-based solution encompassing brands, manufacturers, retailers and social safety nets for apparel workers can help the readymade garment (RMG) sectors of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka attain sustainable recovery, said experts even as they went to add a value-chain-based solution that integrates all variables of the supply chain process — manufacturers, brands, suppliers, buyers, as well as Governments of sourcing countries — would contribute to the recovery process through a better distribution of orders from brands and buyers based in the USA and the Europe.
Experts came up with these observations at a recent international webinar titled ‘Recovery of the Apparel Sectors of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka: Is a Value-chain-based Solution Possible?’ which highlighted the findings of a joint study conducted by Sri Lanka’s Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) and the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Bangladesh.
The speakers at the said event also highlighted importance of a wider social safety net that commits to ensuring a living wage for the garment workers while adding a support mechanism for suppliers to access financing through banks by acting as an ‘informal guarantor’ was also crucial.
